Why Identifying Nutrition Gaps Matters

Nutritional needs can change with age.  Evidence suggests that older adults may require higher intakes of protein and certain micronutrients to help maintain muscle mass, physical function and overall health. Yet dietary quality remains a concern. National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS) data reports that many older adults do not consume enough fibre and may struggle to achieve adequate intakes of protein, fruit and vegetables. In addition, recent UK screening data indicates that 42% of care home residents are at risk of malnutrition.

Together, these findings reinforce the value of a Food First approach, where nutritious and enjoyable food can help those in. your care maintain health, independence and day-to-day wellbeing.
